What this test is
HBsAg is a protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. A positive test means active infection — either acute (recent) or chronic. India has a 3–4% prevalence of chronic hepatitis B, often discovered incidentally on pre-marriage or pre-employment screening. Most chronic infections are silent for decades but can lead to liver cirrhosis and cancer if untreated.

FAQs
What does a positive HBsAg mean?
Active hepatitis B infection. We follow up with additional tests (HBeAg, HBV DNA, LFT) to assess whether it is acute or chronic and how active. Is hepatitis B curable?
Acute hepatitis B usually clears on its own. Chronic infection can be controlled with antiviral medication, often lifelong. Vaccination remains the best protection. Will vaccination show up as positive?
No — the vaccine creates antibodies (anti-HBs), not the surface antigen. HBsAg remains negative.
