What this test is
Anti-CCP antibodies are highly specific for rheumatoid arthritis — much more so than the older rheumatoid factor (RF). They can be positive years before joints are visibly damaged, allowing early treatment that prevents permanent deformity. Ordered when joint pain and swelling suggest an autoimmune cause.
When you need this test
- Symmetric joint pain and swelling (especially hand joints)
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 1 hour
- Family history of rheumatoid arthritis
- Confirmation when rheumatoid factor (RF) is positive
How to prepare
- No fasting required.
- Mention all current arthritis medications and recent steroid use.

FAQs
Is this same as Rheumatoid Factor (RF)?
No — anti-CCP is more specific. RF can be positive in many other conditions (chronic infections, other autoimmune diseases). Anti-CCP positive strongly suggests rheumatoid arthritis. Why is early diagnosis important?
Joint damage from rheumatoid arthritis is permanent. Early aggressive treatment with disease-modifying drugs prevents most damage.
