What this test is
The NS1 antigen test detects a protein released by the dengue virus into the blood. It is positive from day 1 of fever and remains so for about 5–7 days. Beyond that window, dengue IgM antibodies become detectable instead. NS1 is the preferred first test if you've had fever for less than 5 days during a dengue-prone season in Pune (July to November).
When you need this test
- High fever for 2–5 days in monsoon season
- Severe body and joint pain ('break-bone fever')
- Skin rash with fever
- Falling platelet count with unexplained fever
How to prepare
- No fasting required.
- Best done within 5 days of fever onset.
- Mention the day of fever when booking — affects whether NS1 or IgG/IgM is appropriate.
- Bring or mention any platelet counts from previous days.
