What this test is

Breast ultrasound is the first imaging done for a palpable breast lump, especially in women under 40 (where mammography is less informative due to dense breast tissue). It distinguishes between cysts and solid lumps, evaluates lump characteristics, and checks the axillary lymph nodes. Always performed by our female sonographer with a female attendant present.

When you need this test

  • Palpable breast lump
  • Breast pain or skin changes
  • Discharge from nipple
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Follow-up of a previously identified cyst

How to prepare

  • No fasting required.
  • Avoid using deodorant, talc, or lotion on the chest area on the day of the scan.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit.
  • Mention any previous breast scans, mammograms, or family history of breast cancer.

FAQs

  • Ultrasound or mammogram?
Under 40, ultrasound is preferred (denser breast tissue makes mammogram less useful). Over 40, both are often done together.
  • Female sonographer?
Yes — always for breast scans, with a female attendant in the room.
  • Will biopsy be needed?
Only if the ultrasound finding is suspicious (BIRADS 4 or 5). Most lumps in women under 40 are benign cysts or fibroadenomas.
