What this test is

Thyroid ultrasound is the first imaging done for a lump in the front of the neck or for a thyroid nodule detected on examination. It measures thyroid size, identifies cysts vs solid nodules, and grades the suspicion of malignancy using the TI-RADS system. The scan is quick — 15 minutes — and painless. Suspicious nodules may need an FNAC biopsy follow-up.

FAQs

  • Is this the same as a thyroid blood test?
No — they are complementary. Blood test measures hormones (function); ultrasound looks at structure (size, nodules).
  • What is TI-RADS?
A grading system that rates nodules from 1 (definitely benign) to 5 (highly suspicious). It guides whether biopsy is needed.
  • Is it painful?
Not at all — just gel and a probe on the neck for 15 minutes.
