What this test is

KUB ultrasound focuses on the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It detects kidney stones, hydronephrosis (swelling from obstruction), kidney cysts, and bladder problems. Quicker and cheaper than a CT KUB and free of radiation — usually the first imaging done for back pain or blood in urine. Full bladder helps see the bladder wall clearly.

FAQs

  • KUB ultrasound vs CT KUB?
Ultrasound is the first choice — no radiation, cheaper. CT is more sensitive for tiny stones and is reserved for cases where ultrasound isn't definitive.
  • Will it show all stones?
Stones over 5mm are usually visible. Very small stones (under 3mm) may be missed; CT is better for those.
  • How long?
    About 15 minutes.
