What this test is
KUB ultrasound focuses on the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It detects kidney stones, hydronephrosis (swelling from obstruction), kidney cysts, and bladder problems. Quicker and cheaper than a CT KUB and free of radiation — usually the first imaging done for back pain or blood in urine. Full bladder helps see the bladder wall clearly.

- Back pain on one side
- Burning urination or recurrent UTI

- Family history of kidney stones
- Pre-operative workup for urinary surgery
How to prepare
- Drink 4 glasses of water 1 hour before — do not urinate until done.
- No fasting required.
- Wear loose clothing.
- Carry any previous urine reports or kidney scans.
