What this test is
Pelvic ultrasound images the uterus and ovaries in women, and the prostate and bladder in men, through the lower abdominal wall. Useful for fibroids, ovarian cysts, prostate enlargement, and bladder problems. Requires a full bladder, which acts as an acoustic window to see deeper structures clearly. For more detailed gynaecological imaging, a trans-vaginal scan (TVS) is often preferred.

FAQs
Is full bladder really necessary?
Yes — without it the uterus or prostate is largely hidden behind gas-filled intestines. What if I cannot hold urine?
Tell the receptionist on arrival — we'll schedule you sooner. If discomfort is severe we can do the scan in stages. Will a man need TVS?
No — TVS is only for women. For men, a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is the equivalent if needed.
