What this test is

Urine culture takes a sample, grows whatever bacteria are present, and then tests each strain against common antibiotics to see which ones work. Essential for recurrent UTIs, UTIs that haven't responded to first-line antibiotics, and UTIs in pregnancy or diabetes. Results take 48–72 hours because bacteria need time to grow.

FAQs

  • Why does the report take 3 days?
Bacteria need 24–48 hours to grow into visible colonies, then another 24 hours to test against antibiotics.
  • Can I take antibiotics while waiting?
Only after the sample is collected. Starting antibiotics before will sterilise the sample and give a falsely negative result.
  • What does 'no growth' mean?
Either there is no infection, or the infection is from a bacteria that doesn't grow on standard media. Discuss with your doctor.
