What this test is
Quantitative beta hCG measures the exact concentration of the pregnancy hormone in blood. It detects pregnancy as early as 8–10 days after conception — about a week before a missed period. Serial measurements 48 hours apart help confirm a viable pregnancy (hCG roughly doubles) or flag early problems like ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
When you need this test
- Earliest possible pregnancy detection (before missed period)
- Suspected ectopic pregnancy
- Tracking early pregnancy viability after IVF or recurrent miscarriage
- Suspected molar pregnancy
How to prepare
- No fasting required.
- Mention the date of your last period and any fertility medications.
- If repeat testing is planned, schedule the second test exactly 48 hours later.

FAQs
When can I take this test?
From 8–10 days after possible conception (about a week before missed period). Earlier than that risks false negative. Will it tell me if the pregnancy is healthy?
Two readings 48 hours apart help — hCG should roughly double in a healthy early pregnancy. Slower rise raises concern, though ultrasound after 6 weeks is more definitive.Urine test vs blood test?
Home urine test gives a yes/no answer 14 days after conception. Blood test gives an exact number and works a week earlier.
